Psalm 91

No matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him (Christ) the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God (2 Corinthians 1:20).

How does a person say "Yes" and "Amen" to God's promises?

91:1 The one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will REST in the shadow of the Almighty.

91:2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

91:3 Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.

What is the fowler’s snare?

  •  A trap, any trap that would be a snare to you: mental, emotional, romantic, financial traps.  You may not be able to see or recognize the trap but God will keep you from it if He is your shelter.
  • The LORD will save those who are resting in His shadow from the deadly pestilence.  There are a lot of killer diseases running rampant in the world today.

How does a person make the Most High his/her shelter? Psalm 1:1-3 provides a clear explanation of the steps to take to make the Most High your shelter:

  • Do not walk in the counsel of the wicked
  • Do not stand in the way of sinners
  • Do not sit in the seat of the mockers

  • Delight yourself, get pleasure from, gain insight and direction from the Word of God.
  • Meditate on the Word of God day and night.
  • Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them (Psalm 119:140).
What are the benefits of delighting in the Word of God?
  • You will be like a tree planted by streams of water; you will be full of life and always productive.
  •  Whatever you do will prosper.
  • Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you (Proverbs 2:11).
  • Blessed are ALL who fear the LORD, who walk in His ways.  You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours (Psalm 128:1, 2).

91:4 He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

  • His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart, your defense

91:5,6 When you are at REST in the shadow of the Almighty, and you can literally tell it when you are at rest in the shadow of the Almighty:

  • you will not fear the terror of night,
  • nor the arrow that flies by day,
  • nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness
  • nor the plague that destroys at midday.

91:7,8 a thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.  You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

  • Misfortune pursues the sinner, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous (Proverbs 13:21).
  • The righteous are those who are right with God through faith in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:30; Philippians 3:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 3:21-22).
  • The LORD will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life (Psalm 121:7).
  •  Whoever listens to Me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm (Proverbs 1:33).

91:9,10 If you make the Most High your dwelling, your refuge, then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent (dwelling place).

  • He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge (Proverbs 14:26).
  • The fear of the LORD leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble (Proverbs 19:23).

91:11,12 the Most High will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways

  • They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

91:13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

  • Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, and he will flee from you (1 Peter 5:8, 9 & James 4:7).

91:14,15 “Because they love Me, I will rescue them; I will protect them for they acknowledge My name – Jesus is Lord! – They will call upon me, and I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will deliver them and honor them.  With long life will I satisfy them and show them my salvation.”

Because of Your love and faithfulness I will praise Your name, O LORD, for you have exalted above all things Your name and your Word (Psalm 138:2).

Our attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:5-11)

An invitation: If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift yet, but you would like to simply pray this prayer:

“Jesus Christ, I believe you are the Son of God and the only way to God.  I admit that I’m a sinner, please forgive my sins and come into my life; I want to be born again.  Please show me how real you are, also baptize me with your Holy Spirit.  Thank you for accepting me.”

If you’re a skeptic: “God, if this is true, please help me understand so that I can accept the gift of New Birth you purchased for me.”
