In Christ - Part 1

The Reverend A.B. Simpson, founder of Christian Missionary Alliance church, and author of The Holy Spirit, volumes 1 and 2, points out that “the Spirit filled man is free from all men. He does not try to copy any man, but listens directly to the voice of God through His Word and His Spirit. So many of us are parrots, catching the opinion and ideas of others. God wants individual characters and individual messages and every one of us to be himself filled and taught of the Holy Spirit” (The Holy Spirit v.1, p.123).

Frank C. Thompson, the man who compiled and edited the Thompson Chain-reference Bible states, “Many Christians are satisfied to receive all their truth filtered through the mind of some teacher, minister or commentator, seldom, or never, going to the Book of Books for independent study. They inevitably become mere echoes of the opinions of others; they are not grounded in the truth, hence they are liable to be carried about with every wind of Doctrine. It is a great day for a little child when he learns to feed himself; so it becomes a new era in a believer’s life when he forms the habit of going daily to the original sources of spiritual truth for his own personal nourishment.” (The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, Fifth Improved Ed., p.1326).

Along with the apostle Paul, our prayer is that the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all (2 Corinthians 13:14).  We also pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which you have been called, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and God’s incomparably great power towards you because you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:18,19).

Great are the works of the Lord, they are pondered by all who delight in them (Psalm 111:2).  Our hope is that you develop a love for God’s Word so that you may experience all that Jesus Christ purchased for you through his great sacrifice. Our desire is that by the time you finish this study you will have the same attitude as the prophet Jeremiah: “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name” (Jeremiah 15:16).

The belief at Dominion Chapel is that you don’t need to be told what God’s Word says, you need to be encouraged and inspired to search God’s Word yourself.  The aim of our Bible studies is draw you into the Word of God.  Our studies are designed so that you must open your Bible and discover what God’s Word says.

The Holy Spirit is the Author of the Bible:

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit – 2 Peter 1:20,21.

That statement clearly tells us that the men did not write prophecy of Scripture (the Bible), but the Holy Spirit moved them to write what God wanted recorded. That means the Holy Spirit is the Author of the Bible.

We have God’s Holy Spirit living in us:

If you are a born again Christian you are included in Christ and sealed with God’s Holy Spirit and He lives in the hearts of the believing Christian.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promises Holy Spirit – Ephesians 1:13.

As a born again Christian you are:

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come (in our lives) – 2 Corinthians 1:22.

As a born again Christian:

  • God makes you stand firm in Christ
  • God set his seal of ownership on your life
  • God put His Holy Spirit into your heart
  • You have the author of the Bible living in you

The Holy Spirit was sent into our lives to guide us into the truth:

Jesus Christ says, When He, the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit comes into your life, he will guide you into all truth – John 16:13

Jesus Christ, when praying to His Father asked this for those who would come to accept Him as their redeemer: Sanctify them (set them apart) by the truth; your word is truth – John 17:17.

  • God’s Word is the truth! So the Holy Spirit is going to guide into the truth found only in God’s Word.

The Holy Spirit was sent into our lives to show us things yet to come:

  • He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come – John 16:13
  • As you seek the Lord in His Word, you will understand world events and what is going to be happening. God does not want His people ignorant of coming events -- Revelation 1:1-3; 22:16

The Holy Spirit was sent into our lives to help us understand all that God has freely given to us in Christ:

  • You have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely give us – 1 Corinthians 2:12.
  • We know that we live in Christ and He is us the believing Christian, because He has given us of His Holy Spirit – 1 John 4:13.

You do not need teachers to teach you the word of God:

  • As for you Christian, the anointing (the Holy Spirit) you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as His anointing (the Holy Spirit) teaches you about ALL things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit (we have received the Spirit who from God)—just as it has taught you, remain in Christ – 1 John 2:27.

So why are there teachers in the Church?

  • Because a lot of Christians will not read the Bible let alone study it, so God has made provision for those people to hear God’s word taught.
  • God wants us all to grow up in the unity of the faith, and so, because so many of His people will not take Him at His Word and seek Him in His Holy Word with the help of His Holy Spirit, He provides secondary sources for them to learn from.
  • Also, God will use teachers, that is, those who make the effort to seek Him in His word, not all who are recognized to be teachers, to confirm what we have come to understand from the truth of God’s Word in our personal studies.

So, for some, teachers are the source of what they understand about God’s word, and are limited by what they are taught.  The teachers are supposed to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, but that is not always the case.

But those of us who take God seriously and make the effort to seek God in His Word will continually come to understand more and more of what God has freely given us in Christ and that is unlimited.

  • And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him – Hebrews 11:6
  • Jesus Christ promises: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; those who seek find; and to those who knock, the door will be opened – Matthew 7:7,8.

According to those promises, found only in God’s Word, it pays to be an earnest seeker!

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen -- Ephesians 3:20.

If you are a born again Christian God has lavished His grace and love upon your life, don't doubt that!  If you are not born again, but you want God to lavish His grace and love upon your life, here is His invitation:

An Invitation: If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift of forgiveness yet, but you would like to experience the New Life He promises, simply pray this prayer:  “Jesus Christ, I choose to believe you are the Son of God and God’s only sacrifice for the forgiveness of my sins. I admit it, I’m a sinner, please forgive my sins, and I ask you to come into my life, I want to be born again. Save me Jesus.  I don't understand it, but please save me Jesus.  Please show me how real you are! Also baptize me with your Holy Spirit; I want everything you have for me. Thank you for accepting me.”

If you’re a skeptic you can pray a prayer like this: “God, if  this is true about Jesus Christ and a new life, please help me understand so that I can accept your gift of eternal life that you purchased for me by the sacrifice of Your Son.”
