Gift of Righteousness

Righteousness, what is it? How do I define Righteousness?

For over twenty years a definition for Righteousness has escaped me.  To this day, I cannot define Righteousness but I know what it is and that I have it. Righteousness works wonders in you.

Righteousness is a position, and it comes from God and is by faith in the Once For All Atoning Sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

  • The apostle Paul wrote about “a righteousness not of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith” – Philippians 3:9
  •  The apostle Paul also wrote: It is because of God that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, our holiness and redemption – 1 Corinthians 1:30.
  •  Again Paul wrote: “Now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” – Romans 3:21,22.
  • And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.  Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance – Ephesians 1:13,14.

In other words, the moment you accept the truth of Jesus Christ you are included in Christ.

When you come to the point in time that you realize you are a sinner and you need to be cleansed of your sins, and you realize that Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for the forgiveness of your sins, and you ask Him to cleanse you of your sins and welcome Him into your life, you are born again, and included in Christ.

Therefore, because you are included in Christ, you are righteous in God’s sight, and that is only because of your acceptance of His Son.

It is not a position to be earned; it is a gift to be received. You become the righteousness of God in Christ. In Christ, you are in the position of righteousness.

Righteousness is a gift! The apostle Paul tells us, “For if, by the trespass of the one man [Adam], death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ” – Romans 5:17.

“For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive” – 1 Corinthians 15:22.  How much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

  • Righteousness is a gift to be received, we can’t earn it: Jesus Christ earned it for us.
  • Paul says that righteousness comes from God and is by faith -- Philippians 3:9.
  • This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” – Romans 3:21,22

You will know when you have received God’s gift of righteousness because it produces the fruit of peace in your life, along with quietness and confidence.

The prophet Isaiah tells us this: “The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever” – Isaiah 32:17.

Many times over the years I stopped and thought about the intense peace in my life, and a quietness and confidence in my heart. The peace, quietness and confidence that the gift of righteousness produces in a persons heart is so real, so tangible. These are not things you work up, they happen in you.

Righteousness will produce fruit in your life, just as an apple tree produces apples, and cherry trees produce cherries. Righteousness produces peace, a peace you cannot deny, a peace you cannot produce yourself.

Righteousness has a definite effect upon your life: you find yourself enjoying a quietness in your spirit that cannot be explained, just enjoyed, and a confidence that you belong to God.

As we can see, it is not necessary to define Righteousness because we will know when we receive the gift of Righteousness.

Righteousness is a power at work in each of us producing a peace that surpasses understanding, a quietness and a confidence that produces assurance in your heart that you belong to God. You might describe it as a quiet confidence.

This confidence assures us that God’s seal of ownership is on each of our lives. We know without a doubt that His Holy Spirit is in our hearts.  The Spirit of God bears witness with our hearts that we are a child of God. We enjoy an assurance that nothing nor anyone can snatch us out of the palm of God’s hand – Isaiah 32:17; 2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:14; John 10:27-30.

The gift of Righteousness makes us confident! Many times over the years I wondered about the quietness in my life, and the confidence that I have in what I believe.  Not until the day I read that explanation in Isaiah 32:17 did I understand why an unexplainable peace, quietness and confidence are in my life.

Even though I didn’t understand it or was unable explain it, the gift of Righteousness was working in my life producing Peace, Quietness and Confidence. An assurance that I belong to God is in my heart and overrides all doubt.

Is the Gift of Righteousness working in your life?  Are you enjoying an inner peace, a quietness in your heart, and confidence?  If not here is an invitation.

If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift of Righteousness yet, but you would like to enjoy peace, quietness, and confidence simply pray this prayer:

“Jesus Christ, I believe you are the Son of God and that you died on the cross as the sacrifice for my sins; you are the only way to God. I admit that I’m a sinner, please forgive my sins and come into my life; I want to be born again.  Please show me how real you are, also baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Thank you for accepting me.”

If you sincerely prayed that prayer, Jesus Christ now lives in you, God’s Holy Spirit is in your heart, and God’s seal of ownership is upon your life. You have accepted God’s gift of Righteousness and that gift will begin to produce a deep inner peace, a quietness in your heart, and a confidence. Welcome to the family of God.
