Crowns & Rewards

Jesus Christ is speaking, “I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay you according to your deeds,” Revelation 2:23.

Each one should be careful how he builds.  For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.  It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. It what he has built survives, he receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames – 1 Corinthians 3:10-15.

Each of us will be repaid; each of us will be repaid according to our deeds in this life, or we could suffer loss.

Accordingly, the way I see it, it makes sense to find out what deeds will be rewarded and then focus on doing those things. Undoubtedly, focusing on those things that earn rewards will eliminate wasted effort, time, and resources. Does that make sense? I think so!

God does not make it hard to earn rewards:

For example, eternal life is a gift to be received, you can’t earn it, we don’t deserve it. Click here for more information.

Jesus Christ promises: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” – Matthew 7:7,8.

Jesus Christ also promises: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” – Matthew 11:28-30.

There are crowns to be rewarded; here are five that we know about at this time:

  • The Incorruptible Crown: Victor’s Crown – 1 Corinthians 9:24-26; Romans 13:13,14

This crown is for those who live a holy life.  They clothe themselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air -- 1 Corinthians 9:24-26.

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and excessiveness, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature -- Romans 13:13,14

  • The Crown of Life: Martyr’s Crown – Revelation 2:10

Jesus Christ promises: “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” – Revelation 2:10.

Don't entertain fearful thoughts about the Martyr's crown, you may not face the situation where you will die for your faith. But if you do, do not deny Jesus Christ. It's better to loose your life and gain eternal life.

Think about it: Eternal life is FOREVER.

  • The Crown of Glory -- 1 Peter 5:2-4; Ephesians  4:11-13; Acts 20:28

This crown is for those who are called to be Pastors/Shepherds of God’s church:

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away – 1 Peter 5:2-4.

It is Jesus Christ who gives some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ – Ephesians 4:11-13.

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood – Acts 20:28.

  • The Crown of Righteousness -- 2 Timothy 4:8; Hebrews 9:27,28

I have fought the good fight of faith, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award me on that day – and not only to me, but also to ALL who have longed for His appearing – 2 Timothy 4:8

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him – Hebrews 9:27,28.

  • The Crown of Rejoicing -- I Thessalonians 2:19,20

This crown is for those who bring others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing in which we glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when He comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy -- 1 Thessalonians 2:19,20.

There is a way to share in the rewards of others (Reciprocal Blessings):

Jesus Christ promises: “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the one who sent me. Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And if anyone gives EVEN a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward” – Matthew 10:40-42.

Some Christian leaders teach that we can earn “reciprocal blessings.” Reciprocal blessings are shared blessings; rewards others have earned by their efforts are shared with those who support those people.

According to what Jesus Christ says, as recorded in Matthew 10:40-42, I agree with the idea of “reciprocal blessings.” Reciprocal means “mutual.” In other words if you help someone do what God puts into his or her heart to do (Philippians 2:13) then the rewards they receive, you will share in.

Why do I say, “Jesus says”? Because according to what is written in Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He has not changed since the time He walked on earth, and He will never change. This means the things he said back when, He is still saying today. So it is right that I say, “Jesus says.”  If you want to know what Jesus Christ would say about anything, pick up your Bible and read the New Testament, it's all there in writing.

How to earn reciprocal blessings:

Maybe you’re scared to death of telling others about Jesus Christ. Don’t feel guilty, be encouraged. If you never tell anyone about Jesus it will not keep you out of heaven.  Although it will keep you from receiving the crown of rejoicing, so if you can live forever without that crown, don’t let it bother you.

But, according to what Jesus says in Matthew 10:40-42 there are some ways to earn some of the rewards with those who will receive the crown of rejoicing.

Here’s what you can do.  If there is someone at work who has a fervor to tell others about Jesus Christ stand with him or her.  For example, when those around you begin to criticize or make fun of the person simple say:

  • "I don’t think it is right to make fun of . . .; maybe we should give some thought to what he/she is saying.”
  • If they insist on criticizing or making fun of the person, walk away and stay away.
  • If they insist on coming around you criticizing or making fun tell them: “Look, I’m not making fun of . . . and I won’t listen to your criticism. Stop it or stay away from me.”

·     You may have to take some heat, so what?  It will be worth it; God is watching, and you will be rewarded for your stand.

Here is something else you can do to receive reciprocal blessings.  Stand with those T.V evangelists people criticize and make fun of. For example, when people around me start to criticize or make fun of certain T.V. ministries I ask:

  • When was the last time you stood in front of a large crowd and told them about Jesus Christ?
  • How many people have you reached with the message of Jesus Christ?
  • And when they ask, “So, you support . . .?” I answer, “Yes.”

·    I’m willing to take some heat, it's worth it; God sees this and I will be rewarded.

  • Also, I do financially support several T.V. ministries. When it comes time for them to receive their rewards, I will also share in their rewards.  That's too good for me to pass up!
The word of God tells us to make the most of every opportunity -- Ephesians 5:16; Colossians 4:5.

Please keep in mind what Jesus Christ promises: “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the one who sent me.

An Invitation: If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift of forgiveness yet, but you would like to experience the New Life He promises, simply pray this prayer:  “Jesus Christ, I choose to believe you are the Son of God and God’s only sacrifice for the forgiveness of my sins. I admit it, I’m a sinner, please forgive my sins, and I ask you to come into my life, I want to be born again. Save me Jesus.  I don't understand it, but please save me Jesus.  Please show me how real you are! Also baptize me with your Holy Spirit; I want everything you have for me. Thank you for accepting me.”

If you’re a skeptic you can pray a prayer like this: “God, if  this is true about Jesus Christ and a new life, please help me understand so that I can accept your gift of eternal life that you purchased for me by the sacrifice of Your Son.”
