Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit?

Matthew 3:11 John the Baptist speaking, I baptize you with water for repentance.

But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.  He will baptize you with the _______________ and fire.

Is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit for everyone?
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. And you will receive the

Does Jesus Christ desire all of His people to be baptized with the Holy Spirit?

God the Father gave His Son, Jesus, a promise. The promise was that if He would be the sacrificial lamb then He would give Jesus the right to pour out the Holy Spirit on all who would receive Him - Acts 2:33.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the

Jesus Christ willingly submitted himself to the shame and suffering of the cross so that He could receive the promise God made in Him - Acts 2:33.

Think about it, if Jesus willingly went through all the suffering of the crucifixion so that He could pour out the Spirit, doesn’t that make you realize how precious the gift of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is to Jesus? 

He longs for people to open their hearts and desire this precious gift purchased by thesacrifice he suffered.  Doesn’t it make you wonder if Jesus suffers a great hurt when a person rejects His gift? 

After making such a great sacrifice, wouldn’t you agree that Jesus Christ desires all ofhis people to be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

What is the difference between the Spirit within and the Spirit upon?

When you are born again, the Spirit of God comes to live in you, but when you ask for and receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit, you are clothed with power from on high.

In other words, you are first filled with God’s Spirit and then you are clothed (covered) with power.

Born Again: you receive the Spirit of God living in you: 1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you are the temple of God and that the ____________ of God lives _____ you?

Baptism with the Holy Spirit: you receive the Holy Spirit upon you: Luke 24:49  The
resurrected Christ speaking to His disciples: I am going to send you what
My Father has _________; but stay in the city until you have been ________ with power from on high.

What does it mean to be clothed with power from on high?  What is the purpose of this power ?

Acts 1:4,5 This event took place after Jesus rose from the grave: On one occasion,
while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:  Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the _________ my Father __________, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the ________________.

How will you know if you received the baptism with the Holy Spirit?

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the _________________ and began to

Keep in mind that no one could be filled with the Spirit until after Jesus entered into
heaven and sat down at the right hand of God; that is when eternal redemption and
the new birth became available -- Hebrews 9:11,12.

It was after His death, burial, and resurrection that Jesus became the firstborn
(Romans 8:29) and then people began to be filled with the Spirit of God (John 14:15-17). 

It was impossible for anyone to be born again before this point in time because Jesus had not sat down at the right hand of God yet. So on the day the Spirit was poured out, the people were born again, filled with the Spirit and also clothed with power from heaven – the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:44-46 While Peter was still speaking these words the _____________ came on all who heard the word.  And those of the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the ______ of the __________________ hand been poured out even on the Gentiles. What benefits are there to speaking in tongues?

John 7:38,39  Jesus speaking, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said,
‘out of his heart will flow waters of living water.’”  This He spoke concerning the

Keep in mind that tongues is a spiritual gift so it takes faith to operate that gift.  You can’t wait until you feel like praying in tongues, simply do it through out the day; you’ll be glad that you did. 

Just like Bible reading and talking with God is a daily exercise for spiritual growth, likewise, praying in tongues should be a spiritual exercise for your spiritual growth and well-being. 

Praying in tongues clears the spiritual air waves.  Pray in tongues for an hour before you read  the Bible and you will be amazed at how much more revelation you receive. 

The Holy Spirit was sent into our lives to reveal to us all that God has freely given to us through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ  -- 1 Corinthians 2:12-14.

Here is some practical advice:

The gift of Tongues is your personal prayer language given to you by the Holy Spirit.  It is a special gift to you making it possible for you to pray according to God’s will.  In addition, as you pray in tongues, you build up your faith. 

For example, when you are in a situation that is beyond your ability to cope with, and you’re gripped with anxiety, that is the perfect time to pray in tongues because the Spirit of God will intercede for you. 

 At times like that, tongues may seem like groans that words cannot express.  Without question, tongues are for your personal well being, so make use of that life-producing gift.  As you pray in tongues you will find that your faith will be increased to meet the demands of any particular situation.

 A lot of the time, you won’t feel like praying in tongues, even while you exercise this spiritual gift, you won’t feel like doing it.  You mind may argue with your experience calling what you are doing ridiculous, foolish, etc.  But keep letting those strange sounds flow from your mouth and you will experience tremendous spiritual growth, encouragement, strength, joy, even excitement.  The more you use your prayer language, the more you will enjoy it!

In summary, I want to go over the key points concerning the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

First, Jesus Christ is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

Second, we the baptism is for everyone who God will receive this precious gift.

Third, Jesus desires that all his people receive this precious gift because it is the gift promised by the Father. It should be obvious to us that we don’t want to break his heart by refusing the gift He paid such a high price for us to receive.

Fourth, when a person is born again, the Spirit of God comes to live in that person, but when a person receives the baptism with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, comes upon the person. The Spirit of God pours out the miracle working power of God upon us so that we can be witnesses of Jesus Christ.  Now we can do what Jesus was doing (John 14:12; Acts 10:38).

Finally, we talked about some of the wonderful benefits of praying in tongues: spiritual growth, increased faith, clearing the spiritual air waves, praying according to God’s will, inner strength during a difficult situation.

In conclusion, Jesus Christ paid a high price so that we can receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit, there is no doubt that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is for you.  Ask, receive, and then enjoy this marvelous gift Jesus Christ purchased for you.  Pray in tongues and be blessed beyond your expectations.  You will be amazed at how quickly you will grow spiritually if you use your Holy Spirit inspired prayer language through out the day. 

We pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.  We also pray that you being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:16-19).

An Invitation: If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift of eternal life, but you would like to, simply pray this prayer:   “Jesus Christ, I believe you are the Son of God and the only way to God.  I admit that I’m a sinner, please forgive my sins and come into my life; I want to be born again.  Please show me how real you are. Also baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Thank you for accepting me.”

If you’re still a skeptic: “God, if this is true, please help me understand so that I can accept the gift of New Birth you purchased for me.”
